It's time for #WheresSmokey! This location commemorates my living symbol, a lone bear cub that survived a human-caused wildfire on May 9th, 1950—74 years ago today! During the wildfire, his paws and hind legs were badly burned, but thanks to the generous firefighters and rangers who saved him, he recovered from his injuries. As the news of the cub spread, he got a nickname: Smokey Bear! His story spread nationwide, as did his popularity. He was transported to the National Zoo in Washington, D.C.
