In a bubbling fluidized bed, gas moves through the bed in void and in bubbles with higher velocity. Some of the particles are entrained into the freeboard along with these fast moving bubbles and some fine particles are transported with the product gas and leave the reactor at the top.

Bubbling fluidized bed (BFB) boilers are smaller, burn predominantly biomass fuels and are commonly used by industry and CHP production. Detailed analysis of fluidized bed boiler market has been done by Koornneef et al. (2007). They found that there is still room for both technical and economic improvement.
