USS Darter (SS-227), a Gato -class submarine, was the first ship of the United States Navy to be named for the darter. Darter ′s keel was laid down on 20 October 1942 by the Electric Boat Company of Groton, Connecticut.

On September 1st, 1944, the USS Darter, under the command of Commander D. H. McClintock, cleared Brisbane for a period of training enroute to her fourth and last war patrol. She searched the Celebes and South China Seas, returned to Darwin to fuel and make minor repairs 10 September, and put back to the Celebes Sea.
