One of Japan’s main goals during World War II was to remove the United States as a Pacific power in order to gain territory in east Asia and the southwest Pacific islands. Japan hoped to defeat the US Pacific Fleet and use Midway as a base to attack Pearl Harbor, securing dominance in the region and then forcing a negotiated peace.

The Battle of Midway. The Battle of Midway was one of the most important naval battles of the Pacific Campaign of World War II. It was fought between the U.S. and Japanese navies June 4-7, 1942. This battle turned the tide of the war in the Pacific in favor of the Americans.

Midway is the name of the atoll, which is comprised of three main islands, Sand, Spit, and Eastern; as well as smaller ones. Atolls form as oceanic volcanoes erupt and grow above the water line, then erode to sea level. In the case of Midway, that process began 28 million years ago, making it the second oldest of the Hawaiian chain.

And to be honest, the story in “Midway” is less about the Battle of Midway and more about Enterprise Air Group from December 1941-June 1942. And I think that if the viewer keeps that in mind, then all will be good. Those expecting to see full coverage of the four day Battle of Midway will leave the theater disappointed.

In early May 1942, US and Japanese carrier forces clashed in the Battle of the Coral Sea. While both sides suffered major losses, the US Navy checked a major Japanese offensive for the first time. Then, in the Battle of Midway the following month, US carrier aircraft dealt a devastating blow to the Japanese navy, destroying four aircraft carriers.

The origins of the Battle of Midway actually went back several months with the plans of Admiral Yamamoto, the mastermind behind the Pearl Harbor attack. After the Japanese had swept to an immense sea empire in Asia and the southwestern Pacific, even attacking Australia in February 1942, Yamamoto looked for the means to secure Japan’s gains.

Often overshadowed by the Battle of Midway, the hard-fought carrier naval battle in May 1942 in the waters of the Coral Sea north of Australia marked the end of the phase of Japanese triumphs in the Pacific War and proved to be of strategic significance.
