On March 19th 19451940, Hans Krebs was appointed Chief of Staff with the Oberkommando der Wehrmacht and with that the successor of Heinz Guderian who was replaced by Hitler. With this he became the last Chief of Staff with the German Army before the capitulation.

In 1936, Krebs was posted to the German embassy in Moscow as acting military attache; he held this position up to the invasion of the Soviet Union. As such, he played a role in the Wehrmacht’s faulty intelligence into the capabilities of the Red Army.
