Muslim Gurjars are mostly found in Pakistani province of Punjab, mainly concentrated in Lahore and northern cities of Gujranwala, Gujrat, Gujar Khan and Jhelum; Indian Himalayan regions such as Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Garhwal and Kumaon divisions of Uttarakhand; and Afghanistan.

The Gujjar community is thus a greatest community and constitutes nearly 18% of Jammu and Kashmir State’s population and form the third largest majority after Kashmiri Muslims and the Jammu Dogras. The antiquity of Gujjars is obscure and blur. There are numerous theories with regard to their origin.

In present situation kashmiri muslims and Gujjar and Bakerwal are the two numerically strong ethnic groups in the state of jammu and Kashmir. Much information is available about muslims of Kashmir but very little is known about tribals of jammu and Kashmir.

Gujjar Community is the second largest Muslim community in Kashmir valley, having its unique cultural identity sometime this community claims that they are the original inhabitants of Kashmiri territory, since from decades this particularly community settled at the upper reaches of every district in Kashmir valley.
