Ryman Auditorium (originally Union Gospel Tabernacle and renamed Grand Ole Opry House for a period) is a historic 2,362-seat live-performance venue and museum located at 116 Rep. John Lewis Way North, in the downtown core of Nashville, Tennessee, United States. It is best known as the home of the Grand Ole Opry from 1943 to 1974.

The Grand Ole Opry is a regular live country-music radio broadcast originating from Nashville, Tennessee, on WSM, held between two and five nights per week, depending on the time of year.

Grand Ole Opry House | March 1974 - Present. The first venue built specifically as a home for the show, the Grand Ole Opry House opened on March 16, 1974 with a capacity larger than any of the Opry’s previous homes: 4,400 seats. The ceremony was attended by President Richard Nixon, who played piano and sang on the show that night.

The Ryman Auditorium is the most famous former home of the Grand Ole Opry (1943-1974), and the Opry show returns to the historic building a few times throughout the year for Opry Country Classics and Opry at the Ryman. The Ryman is also host to numerous concerts and events throughout the year.

Ryman Auditorium is one of the most well-known performance venues in music–and for good reason. It’s the Mother Church of Country Music, the birthplace of bluegrass, and the original home of the Grand Ole Opry where the careers of countless musical legends were launched.

For 11 years, the Ryman’s name was even changed to the “Grand Ole Opry House.” In 1945, Earl Scruggs made his Opry debut with Bill Monroe’s Blue Grass Boys, building the prototype for the bluegrass sound and immortalizing the Ryman as the birthplace of bluegrass music.
