The future of the Alfa Romeo Giulia is starting to look a whole lot less exciting than its current sports sedan self. According to an exclusive report from French automotive magazine L’argus, the brand’s enthusiast favorite model is slated to transition to the crossover segment come its next major update,

Alfa Romeo’s boss Santo Ficili told French car magazine L’Argus the next-generation Giulia will feature “a new design with a new type of bodywork.” Later Ficili confirmed that the next-generation Stelvio crossover and Giulia sedan will ride on the same Stellantis STLA Large platform.

Rather than another conventional-bodied upright SUV, Alfa could be looking at something more stylish for this one by way of a crossover coupe. The style, popularized by the BMW X6 and a host of Mercedes-Benz SUV Coupe and Audi Sportback models, is less stodgy than the usual SUV, and that suits the brand's character well.
